4-days birding safari Uganda to Murchison Falls and Budongo forest. Murchison Falls is third in Uganda’s most popular Park for birding experience. Spotting birds during amazing on-game drives, launch trips along the River Nile, and nature walk offer you an opportunity to come across distinct birdlife. There are over 650 bird species that have been recorded to be existing in the conservation area classified into broader categories of Savannah forest birds, water birds, and Albertine endemic. The commonest in the plains include; ground hornbills, secretary birds, and weavers among others. while closer to the river where there are more thickets and woodlands including the francolins, hornbills, grey heron, hamerkop, doves, mousebirds, and warblers.
An itinerary for 4 Days birding Safari Uganda
Day 1: Transfer to Masindi via Mabamba Bay Shoebill Stork
The birding safari experience will start with, our driver/guide picking you up from the hotel or place of residence, then brief you about the birding experience safari proceed to Mabamba Swamp, 50 km west of Kampala. Along the way, there is an opportunity to spot different bird species on the swamp-like the Papyrus Gonolek, White Shouldered Tit, Red Cap, and Weyns Weaver. This Swamp is one of the best places to spot the rare Shoebill Stork and other species like; Jacanas and Blue Swallow a migrant species, a variety of egrets, ducks, etc. later on, drive back to Kampala where you will connect to Masindi via the Luwero triangle while looking out for the White-crested. One will have an opportunity to observe Turaco, Cardinal, and Nubian Woodpecker. Return to hotel.
Day 2: Birding in Budongo forest and transfer to Northern Murchison
After early morning breakfast, then drive to Budongo Forest for a bird watching experience along the Royal Mile, a truly spectacular road with a forest canopy towering far overhead. There is a good system of trails in the forest where you will expect skulking birds like the Nahan’s Francolin, excessively noisy White-thighed Hornbill, graceful Cassin’s and Sabine’s Spinetail, Blue-throated Roller, Yellow-browed Camaroptera, Forest Flycatcher, Chestnut-capped Flycatcher, Ituri Batis, Lemon Bellied Crombec, Yellow-Billed, Grey Throated, Hairy Breasted, and Yellow Spotted Barbet, Slender Billed, White-Throated, Red-Tailed Bristlebill, and Black-capped Apalis among others. You will also look out for the Blue, Red-Tailed, and black and white Colobus monkey. On lucky days the chimps cross the trail. Dinner and overnight
Day 3: Birding in Northern Murchison Falls
Early morning cup of tea at 6:30 am, then the ranger and our driver guide will pick you up from the lodge to start your Game bird viewing at 7:00 am. During the drive you will be in a position to spot Francolins, Black Billed Barbet, Swallow-tailed, Little Bee-eaters, Abyssinian Rollers, the giant Abyssinian Ground Hornbills, Black Winged and Northern Red Bishops, Chestnut Crowned, and the White Browed Sparrow Weaver among others. Back to the lodge for breakfast and lunch as you relax/freshen up and have lunch as you prepare for the afternoon boat cruise.
On the boat, you will be able to see the rare Shoebill Stork. There will be other birds including the Red-throated and Northern Carmine Bee-eater mammals such as Rothschild’s Giraffe, Cape buffalo, Elephant, Waterbuck, and many others will be viewed. Other birds to look out for include the Saddle-billed, Pygmy, and striped Kingfishers. On the game drive, we lookout for Heuglin’s. The boat will lead you to the base of these falls, where you will get out and start on a 1-hour hike to the top of the Murchison waterfalls, you will see amazing sceneries; right from the falls, and vegetation among others. You will meet your driver/guide at the top who will later transfer you back to the lodge. Dinner and Overnight.
