Ssese Islands Uganda

Ssese Islands on Lake Victoria 55km south of Entebbe is a popular tourist destination with a collection of 84 attractive Islands. The Islands are described similar to the Caribbean islands.

 The local residents are called the Bassese people. The main economic activity of the people is fishing for Tilapia and Nile Perch. The major attractions in the area include; the natural sandy beaches, which have been constructed by investors, lake Victoria, various species of birds, monkeys, forests and palm plantations. Local inhabitants traditionally call Ssese as the Islands of the Gods, and one specific island called Bubembe is regarded to be home to “Mukasa”, the spirit presiding over Lake Victoria. The largest island is called Buggala Island which hosts the District headquarters. Other small islands include, Bukasa, Damba, Funve, Serinya, Bufumira, Bugaba, Buyoya among others

Access to the main island is by ferry which leaves Nakiwogo docking site in Entebbe at 2pm to the Lutoboka landing site in Buggala island or travel by road to Masaka then to Bukakata landing site; where you will take a ferry, and reach the main island in 1hour forty five minutes.
