KIBALE NATIONAL PARK


Kibale National park covering an area of 760sq.km is located south of Fort portal at an altitude of 1,230m above sea level .The park provides a unique habitat of 13 primates species, 340 birds species, 14 species of snakes, 27 species of frogs and toads, at least 20 species of other reptiles and at least 200 species of butterflies It hosts a population of more than 1,000 chimpanzees, including the red colobus and black-and-white colobus, monkey.

Tourist Activities:
Chimpanzee tracking
Kibale's major tourist attraction is chimpanzee tracking, Chimpanzee tracking involves walks into the forest in search of the chimps which can later be discovered playing in trees. The activity takes 2 -3 hours. The forest has one of the highest diversity of primates in Africa totaling 13 species including the black and white colobus, blue monkey and grey - cheeked mangabey, red tailed monkey, bush babies and pottos.

Chimpanzee habituation experience
The chimpanzee habituation experience allows one to stay with the Chimps for longer hours. You can see the chimps de-nesting (coming out of their nocturnal nests)between 05.30 – 06.30, before following them during the day until they create new nests and retire for night around 19.00. The habituation experience runs during tourist low season months.

Nature walks and Forest hike
Nature walks can be organized in the Kibale rain forest. This will give you the opportunity of seeing other primates besides the chimps. For birders expect to see many bird species which are resident.
Forest hike is a seasonal 12 km hike which is restricted to the dry seasons of mid November – February, June – September. It explodes the park’s diverse habitats including tropical rainforest, riverine forest, swamp and grass land. The wall begins at 8.00 am from Kanyanchu visitor centre and ends at the elephant wallow around 14.00 pm
.
Bird Watching
 Along the main road from the Kanyanchu visitor centre. Watch out for species such African Goshawk, the Majestic Ground eagle and Masked Apalis as Scaly Francolin, Marsh Tchagra, and the scarce Grey-headed Olive-back.

While in the forest expect to see White-napped Pigeon, Pied Hornbill, Yellow-spotted, and Yellow-billed Barbets.

The Bigodi wetland sanctuary may reward you with Papyrus Gonolek, White-winged Warbler and Papyrus Canary among others.
Visit to the Kasenda Crater lakes.
A collection of crater lakes located about 30km south of fort portal Visits to kasenda Crater lakes will reward you with the stunning views of several lakes of varying size and character. The lakes are bilharzias free and recommended for swimming. Crater lakes are formed by vulcanicity, with a violent eruption causing the top of a volcano to be blown off, leaving a crater. Some of the crater lakes include lake Nkuruba, Lake Nyinambuga, Lake NyabikereLake Saaka, Lake Ekigere
